Southern Mom Loves: Roominate Wired Building Sets Combine Fun With Teaching STEM Skills

Roominate Wired Building Sets Combine Fun With Teaching STEM Skills

Thursday, November 20, 2014

I received a Studio set from Roominate in order to facilitate an honest review. All opinions are my own.

When you think about dolls and building sets for kids, you don't usually think they're educational. Well, perhaps in the lightest way, but really educational? That's why I'm geeking out over the Roominate Wired Building Sets. They're designed to teach STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Math) skills to your kids while they play!

About Roominate:

Alice Brooks and Bettina Chen met and became friends in the master’s engineering program at Stanford. As two of the few women in the program, they compared stories on why they had pursued engineering. They were both inspired by their childhood toys.
In the US, less than 15% of women enter college intending to major in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) field. Alice and Bettina believe the gender gap starts young. Many girls’ toys lag behind in the development of spatial skills, hands-on problem solving skills, and confidence with technology. These are exactly the skills that Roominate aims to develop.
Roominate’s unique blend of building, circuits, design, crafts, storytelling, and creativity teaches kids while they play. Using motor and light circuits, modular furniture building pieces and walls, Roominate empowers kids to build endless amazing creations!
Roominate teaches:
  • Hands-On Problem Solving
  • Spatial + Fine Motor Skills
  • Self-Confidence
  • Creativity
  • Basic Circuitry
Alice and Bettina designed Roominate to inspire the next generation of innovators.

I was provided the Roominate Studio Set to review, and here is what I found.

The building set itself comes in great packaging complete with a carry handle, so the set can be packed up and taken with you wherever you go. The packaging is bright and eye-catching and encourages creativity by showing some of the many ways that the set can be assembled. There are any number of configurations for the walls and furniture, and the instructions include cute cut-out paper components to use. I'll tell you all about those in a minute.

The box contains packages for each part of the building, designing, and wiring process, and also included some cute inhabitants for your custom creation.

The first set was for the walls/floor. It comes with sturdy plastic sheets that can be clipped together however your imagination deigns with the included plastic clips. It also comes with colorful paper that you can use to decorate. Make the walls different colors, cut a rug, use your imagination! The possibilities are endless.

The next set comes with plastic furniture components. These snap together in any number of ways to make chairs, tables, beds, bookshelves...the sky is the limit! They include some great ideas for furniture pieces, which can be augmented with the plastic wall clips or some creative use of paper.

The last kit included all of the wiring components you need to build a cool fan for your studio, complete with easy assembling instructions. AAA Batteries not included.

Pretty cool, huh? It's easy enough for the recommended age of 6+, but the motor can be used for other projects once they have the hang of building the fan. It's all about inspiring kids to build on what they've learned!

Overall, I think this is an amazing idea. This set would be great for either boys or girls, but especially for girls who aren't traditionally provided that many STEM learning toys by toy manufacturers. Our girls can grasp more than feeding baby dolls, and I love that the brilliant ladies behind this brand are giving people more of a choice.
