Southern Mom Loves: #ThankYouNurses For Being Advocates Too. Sometimes We Need It

#ThankYouNurses For Being Advocates Too. Sometimes We Need It

This review was made possible by iConnect and Pampers. I was provided compensation to facilitate this post, but all opinions are 100% mine.I just recently learned about the Thank You Nurses Awards program launched by Pampers and I couldn't have been happier. I've known so many wonderful nurses, and heard their funny, gross, heartwarming, and tragic stories. I know that nurses are often the unsung heroes in hospitals and offices, providing the care, but receiving none of the praise. They treat us, comfort us, and often become our advocates; Our voices in the medical system when we need them. One such nurse worked in Labor & Delivery when I had my daughter.

When I had my first child, I assumed I would breastfeed him. Because of complications, we were in the hospital for a few days after the delivery. While we were there, he was given formula, and after that he refused to breastfeed, so I just gave in. I was crushed. I felt like I had failed.

When I had my second child, I was prepared. I had read all the books and knew what I should do to inform the staff of my choice to breastfeed only. I had read that I may have to fight for this; That I should be prepared to dig my heels in and insist. I was ready for battle.

When we arrived at the hospital, I waited to get settled in and meet my nurses, and told each one that I would be breastfeeding only; Not to give my daughter any formula at any time. I'm sure I sounded like a broken record, but this was so important to me. I was ready for the questions (What if she starts crying while we have her?), and ready for the old-fashioned statements (It's just as nutritious. She'll be fine.)

What I wasn't ready for was one nurse to hear me and go above and beyond. That while I was going through the stress of having a baby, I wasn't also going through the stress of trying to make sure my wishes were followed. She reassured me, talked to all of the staff, made sure I had more time to start breastfeeding after the delivery and before they whisked her away from me, left notes on charts and bassinets for the next shift, checked up on my daughter when she had to be away from me, and made sure that my daughter stayed with me in my room even though others insisted I should rest.

I didn't need to rest, I just needed to be able to breastfeed my child, and I can't thank her enough.

Now you can nominate your favorite nurse. Pampers is launching the Thank You Nurses Awards program, honoring nurses across three award categories: Labor & Delivery, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Postpartum. I'm inviting parents to share their stories of nurses who helped make life #betterforbaby by submitting a nurse nomination to the Pampers Swaddlers Thank You Nurses Awards at Nurse nominations can be submitted between November 9th and December 14th.
  • Three finalists, one in each category (Labor & Delivery, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Postpartum), will be announced in March and the grand prize honoree will be announced in May.
  • The three finalists will be honored with short documentary videos showcasing their unique and inspirational nursing stories.
  • Each of the three finalists will receive a one-year membership to the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), attendance at the 2016 AWHONN Convention, Procter & Gamble care packages, and more. Visit for full prizing details.
  • In honor of these nurse winners, three Pampers Swaddlers scholarships will be made available to help nurses from underrepresented groups complete their studies toward a Master of Science in Nursing degree.
