IndieStitch May 2023 Unboxing + a Discount Code & June Pattern Spoiler!

Friday, May 12, 2023

I received a complimentary box from IndieStitch in order to facilitate an unboxing post. All opinions are my own. This post may contain some affiliate links.

Hello and Happy Spring! I'm back with the IndieStitch Box for May 2023! IndieStitch is a monthly box for sewing enthusiasts that provides you with everything you need to complete the month's (beginner to intermediate) apparel project, plus a few fun extras. Since all of the planning and shopping is done for you, it's a great way to be able to get down to the fun part. I've also got a spoiler for the June project (I'm so excited for it!) and a fantastic 50% off discount code for you! Let's unbox it!

Setting you up with everything you need, month after month, to sew your own clothes.

"Hi, I’m Amber! I created Indie Stitch so that you can make your own clothes even if your days are long and your hands are busy...Sewing your own clothes, choosing to create something with your hands, and the happiness that comes from wearing your new outfit feels incredible. It’s an accomplishment worth celebrating.

When I worked for boutique shops sewing clothes and bags, I realized something: it was easy and straightforward for me to finish those projects because all of the materials were sent to me. The thread matched, I had the right type and amount of fabric, and the patterns were printed and ready to go. All I needed to do was sit and sew."

That’s what makes IndieStitch so special. When you open up your box, you’ll have exactly what you need to get back to sewing for you.

Subscription Options

As you can see above, there are 12-month, 6-month, and 1-month plans and the cost goes down with the longer commitments. The "First Box" price shown above for the 12-month and 6-month plans includes a 30% discount, but I've got an even better discount code for you at the end of this post!

How Does It Work?

When you sign up for IndieStitch, you'll provide your size range for the printed pattern that comes in your box every month.

Once subscribed, you'll receive an email around the end of the month (28th - End of Month) to choose the fabric you want to use for the next month's pattern. The boxes ship out around the 4th of each month. You can choose to sew on your own using the video tutorials provided or join the Sew Along that happens in the IndieStitch Facebook group on the Monday around the 14th.

Your membership will renew for the next month from the 13th - 15th.

The next month's pattern is revealed on the Second Week of the Month on all social media channels (or here on my blog 😉.)

If you'd like to see some of their past boxes, check out all of my IndieStitch unboxings here.

May Pattern

The pattern we're going to be making this month is the Square Neck Top by Friday Pattern Co."The Square Neck Top is a boxy dolman-sleeved top with a square neckline. It is slightly cropped. It is a great beginner sewing pattern and includes pattern pieces to make the top from a knit or woven fabric!"

- Easy to sew!
- Includes pieces for making the top in a knit or a woven fabric.
- Includes front pieces drafted for an A/B cup or a C/D cup.

I love that this has the pattern drafted for A/B or C/D cups. Most patterns and ready-to-wear clothing are drafted for a B or C cup. I received a knit fabric for this so I won't have to worry about that now but I'd love to do this again in a woven fabric and extend the bottom hem leaving longer side slits for a breezy tunic-type top.

May Fabric Choices

The fabric choices for this month are:
    1. Mint Floral Textured Knit - 95% Polyester 5% Spandex - Weight: 160 GSM
    2. Grape Stretch Crepe Woven - 95% Polyester 5% Spandex - Weight: 125 GSM
    3. Mauve Slub Jersey Knit - 97% Rayon 3% Spandex - Weight: 190 GSM
    4. White Double Gauze - 100% Cotton - Weight: 115 GSM
    5. Blue Print Rayon/Linen Blend - 70% Rayon, 30% Linen - Weight: 180 GSM
    6. Dark Sage Techno Knit - 94% Polyester 6% Spandex - Weight: 220 GSM

Your IndieStitch Box comes with a card right on top that includes all of the pertinent information for the month including a code that you can use to download a digital version of the pattern. It gives you the current month's Sew Along dates and a QR code that takes you right to the sewing video tutorial and resources for the month.

First out is our fabric. For this pattern, I received 2 yards of the Mauve Slub Jersey Knit. Just an FYI, this is 97% Rayon, not polyester as printed on the sticker. They will send you enough fabric to make the largest version of the pattern in your size range. It also gives us care instructions for pre-washing our fabric.

My 1st choice was the white double gauze (was thinking of ombre dip-dying the finished shirt) and the mauve jersey was my 2nd choice. I'm kinda glad I got this one because it is much prettier than in the initial photos I saw (and I won't have to wait on myself to have time to dye it, lol.) It has kind of a light crepey feel and the slub looks like sateen stitching. This is going to make such a pretty shirt!

Remember to pre-wash your fabric, even if it won't shrink!

Next out are the notions to help us make our pattern. There is a spool of matching Gütermann thread and two of the correct machine needles for our fabric type and weight. LOVE having someone else do the matching and choosing here; I am that person at the thread rack debating the right type and color of thread with myself for waaaay too long!

I also received a length of lightweight, stretchy fusible interfacing.

Next out is our paper pattern, the Square Neck Top by Friday Pattern Co.. You can cut it out directly or trace off just the pieces you'll be using in your size if you like to conserve your patterns.

Next out is our first "extra", a small roll of super-cute Washi Tape. I received a pattern of bamboo leaves and birds. IndieStitch included it with the recommendation to use a piece of Washi Tape on your sewing machine to label which size and kind of needle is currently in your machine and that's so smart!

Next is our 2nd extra, a Sewing Charm Keychain. This is so stinkin' cute! I'd love to make these into a charm bracelet. Love it!

Last out is our 3rd extra, a Thread Organization Bundle. I wasn't 100% on how to use these but once it hit me, I love them! You use the large, round ones around your thread spool to keep it tidy, use the clear ones around your bobbin, and the long ones hold the bobbin to the matching thread spool. Very cool!

That was the IndieStitch May 2023 box! I absolutely love that they include everything you might need to just get down to sewing, including the correct fabric type, thread, and needles for your machine. We also get a cool, indie pattern. This box is a treasure for home sewists!

It seems like all of the projects offered in the boxes are for a "confident beginner" so even if you're fairly new to sewing, you can do it. On top of that, the owner of IndieStitch does a step-by-step Sew Along for each pattern, so even if you're a beginning beginner, it is 100% doable.

Plus, you'll learn so much just from watching and following along and if you have a question, you can always ask in the Facebook group. It's a nice little community!

🛑 SPOILERS AHEAD! 🛑

So far we know that June's pattern will be the Sunday Romper by Love Notions!

"Introducing the Sunday Romper that everyone can wear. The front and back v-neck openings allow for easy on and off. Front-angled pockets are super practical and look great! An elasticated casing at the natural waist makes this easy to fit and wear. Choose from a tank or dolman bodice. Five bottom options include 5″ shorts, cropped pants, full-length pants, maxi skirt, and knee-length skirt. This romper is meant for knit fabrics."

I can't wait for this one; I will be making several versions of it! This could be an easy-breezy jumpsuit or maxi dress to wear out or a romper as loungewear. You can bet I'll do a version with wide-leg pants and maybe even enlarge the neckline of the dolman top and add a strap to the back of the neck, a la the Sawyer Lounge Dress from the March box.

If you'd like to subscribe to IndieStitch Monthly Sewing Kits, you can get 30% off your first box on the 6- or 12-month plans, but the absolutely lovely owner offered something even better for my readers!

You can get 50% Off your first box on the 6- or 12-month plans with code SOUTHERNMOM50 here.
