Hi, guys,  I'm back with an unboxing of the IndieStitch Box for January 2024! IndieStitch is a monthly subscription box for sewing enthusiasts that provides you with everything you need to complete a beginner-friendly clothing project, plus a few fun extras. Since all of the planning is done for you, it's a great way to be able to get down to the fun part! I also have a fantastic discount code for you, a double box deal, and a spoiler for the February pattern! Let's unbox it!

About IndieStitch

At IndieStitch, we simplify your creative journey with monthly sewing kits packed with amazing patterns, beautiful fabrics, and guided tutorials. Transform your sewing dreams into reality and proudly say, ‘Thanks, I made it!’

That’s what makes IndieStitch so special. When you open up your box, you’ll have exactly what you need to get back to sewing for you.

It's also a fantastic box for sewing beginners who want to jump into making their own clothing. All of the projects offered in the boxes are for a "confident beginner" so even if you're fairly new to sewing, you can complete these projects.

IndieStitch does a step-by-step Sew Along for each pattern that is uploaded to the Membership Hub every month. In addition to that, the Facebook group sew-along is another way to learn and share and ask questions; It's a lovely little community!

Even if you're a beginning beginner, these kits are 100% doable.

NEW Subscription Options!

We've got some exciting new pricing for the New Year! In addition to the previous month-to-month payments on the 9-month, 6-month, and 1-month plans, there is now an option to pre-pay for an extra discount! If you pre-pay for the 9-month plan, your box price could go as low as $70 per box, plus you can use the code SOUTHERNMOM50 to get 50% off your first box on the 6 and 9-month plans! That's a HUGE savings!

How Does It Work?

  • When you sign up for IndieStitch, you'll provide your size range for the printed pattern that comes in your box every month.
  • Once subscribed, you'll receive an email around the end of the month (28th - End of Month) to choose the fabric for the next month's pattern.
  • Your box ships out around the 4th of each month.
  • You can choose to sew it up on your own using the pattern instructions, use the video tutorials provided in the IndieStitch Membership Hub, and/or join the Sew Along that happens in the IndieStitch Facebook group starting on the Monday around the 14th.
  • Your membership will renew for the next month between the 13th - 15th.
  • The next month's pattern is revealed on the Second Week of the Month on all social media channels (or here on my blog 😉.)

There is an IndieStitch shop where you can buy some of the past boxes, fabrics from past boxes by the half-yard, notions, and the Mystery Pack, a limited-time mystery package of fabrics, tools, notions, threads, and sewing swag from past IndieStitch boxes for just $30!

January 2024 Pattern

The pattern we're making this month is the Flex Leggings from Sinclair Patterns!

Fitted athletic style leggings with a contoured high/medium rise waistband, no front seam, and a gusset. Come as plain leggings or color-blocked leggings (top or top/bottom colorblock) with an optional pocket. Offered in full, 7/8, and cropped (plain and top color block only) lengths. Optional back waistband slip pocket, front drawstring.

The pattern offers the following options:

  • View A - plain full-length leggings with a high/medium rise yoga waistband
  • View B - color-blocked at the top full-length leggings with a pocket and a yoga waistband
  • View C - color-blocked at the top 3/4 length leggings with a pocket and a yoga waistband
  • View B - color-blocked at the top and bottom full-length leggings with a pocket and a yoga waistband

This pattern is perfect to make some athletic leggings to help you keep those New Year's fitness resolutions or to make a stylish pair in a soft, brushed cotton to lounge in. I think I'm most excited about making a hidden back waistband pocket for the first time!

January 2024 Fabric Choices

This month we have 7 choices! 5 are reversible athletic knits and 2 are solid black fabrics that will also include a sheer black mesh for an optional accent.

  1. Olive Green Double-Sided Athletic Knit - 47% PBT / 37% Polyester / 16% Spandex - 285 gsm
  2. Light Gray Double-Sided Athletic Knit - 47% PBT / 37% Polyester / 16% Spandex - 285 gsm
  3. Pink Double-Sided Athletic Knit - 47% PBT / 37% Polyester / 16% Spandex - 285 gsm
  4. Purple Double-Sided Athletic Knit - 47% PBT / 37% Polyester / 16% Spandex - 285 gsm
  5. Orange Double-Sided Athletic Knit - 47% PBT / 37% Polyester / 16% Spandex - 285 gsm
  6. Black Cotton Spandex with Mesh Accent - 96% Cotton / 4% Spandex - ~200 gsm (Mesh - 92% Nylon / 8% Spandex - 95 gsm)
  7. Black Yoga Knit with Mesh Accent - 95% Polyester / 5% Spandex - 300 gsm (Mesh - 92% Nylon / 8% Spandex - 95 gsm)

We have 5 athletic knit options that have a solid color on one side and a heathered pattern on the other side to aid in making the color-blocked version. We also have a couple of solid black fabrics that will come with a separate sheer mesh fabric to use in the color-blocked areas, if desired. These can also be made in one solid color, so you really have a lot of style options with this pattern.

IndieStitch January 2024 Unboxing

The IndieStitch Box comes with a card on top that includes all of the pertinent information for the month including a code that you can use to download a digital version of the pattern and instructions. It gives you the current month's Sew Along dates and a QR code that takes you to the sewing resources for the month.

First out is the fabric. For this pattern, I received 3 yards of the Black Cotton Spandex.

I really appreciate getting the choice of a natural fabric option like cotton. This fabric is pretty darn soft but also thick enough to make sure my finished leggings are opaque.

I really love having someone who chooses the appropriate fabrics for me. I don't have a lot of fabric store options near me so I recently bought 15 yards of various-colored jersey fabrics online to make a few more pairs of last January's Flare Leggings (they're SO GOOD, y'all!) and a few more Sawyer Sleep Dresses from March's box (love it!) Guess, what? I chose the wrong fabric weight and ended up with 15 yards of jersey that would be more appropriate for undies. Womp, womp.

Next out is the sheer mesh to use for the color-blocking option with our black main fabric.

I have a pair of athletic-fabric leggings that use black mesh on the outer legs and I love the look so I'm excited to be able to make a more comfy cotton legging with that same mesh accent.

Next out are the notions to help us make our pattern this month. We have a spool of matching Coats & Clark thread, two ball-point machine needles for knits, and a length of 1/2" elastic for the waistband and hems.

Next out is our printed pattern, the Flex Leggings from Sinclair Patterns. It's printed on thick copy shop paper so you'll be able to use it again and again without tearing it to shreds like sometimes happens with commercial tissue paper patterns.

Next out is our first extra, a Retractable Tape Measure (in centimeters.) You pull the tape measure out, bring it around the area you want to measure, slot the plastic piece on the end into the hole on the opposite side, hit the button to retract the tape to fit snugly, then you can let go. This will come in really handy when you're measuring yourself; You won't have to worry about holding the tape in place while twisting to read it.

Last out is our 2nd extra, a set of 10 Sewing Labels! How stinkin' cute are these?!?! I've been wanting to make a set of labels for my sewing projects but was at a loss as to how to do it. It's not always immediately apparent which side is the back when wearing handmade clothing, so having labels ready to sew in will be nice. These are also very high-quality, embroidered labels.

I hope they decide to sell these in their shop because I will need more of these cute labels!

That was the IndieStitch January 2024 box. I really love getting these boxes every month with a cool new clothing project and handy sewing notions, straight to my door. It's always a fun surprise to see what the extras are and they're always good. I'm excited to make a new pair of leggings to wear while working out or lounging around!

I absolutely love that they include everything you might need to just get down to sewing, including the correct fabric type, thread, and needles for your machine. We also get a cool, indie pattern. This box is a treasure for home sewists!

SPOILERS AHEAD!

So far we know that February's pattern will be the Everyday Elegance Top from Patterns For Pirates!

This beginner/intermediate pattern has all the style you need in a loose, flowy, comfortable shirt! It is drafted for woven/non-stretch fabrics with a soft drape like rayon challis, crepe, chiffon, georgette, etc.

Sleeve options include short sleeves, 3/4 with button tab, and long bishop sleeve with a thicker elastic at wrist. The longer curved hem of the top length is perfect to pair with leggings, skinny jeans, or your favorite work slacks. The dress length is such an easy and cool wear for a BBQ or casual wedding!  Wear it loose, or belt it (belt included in tutorial) for a more fitted look. The v neck is a continous bound binding for ease and neckline has binding options (neckline only and extended with ties) and collar.  The tutorial has both quick and easy methods as well as cleaner finishes that hide seams.

What a great versatile pattern! You can make this one up as a shirt, tunic, or dress with various sleeve lengths and styles.

A flirty dress would be a great project for a Valentine's date night. I could see it made up beautifully with the Scarlet Rayon Challis from last February's Valetta Top project. Pretty please, IndieStitch???
