Southern Mom Loves: Jenny Craig 5 Day Weight Loss Starter Kit {Unboxing and Review}

Jenny Craig 5 Day Weight Loss Starter Kit {Unboxing and Review}

Tuesday, February 9, 2016

I was provided a free Jenny Craig Weight Loss Starter Kit. However, the opinions expressed are entirely my own. #JennyCraigKit @Walmart

I've dieted on and off throughout the past 15 years, and I've found that "diets" that provide portion-and calorie-controlled meals are the simplest to follow, the easiest to stick to, and the most effective in the long run. Quick-fix diets may work for the (very) short term, but you quickly gain back everything you lost and then some, which is known as "weight cycling" or "yo-yo dieting" and can increase the risk for certain health problems.

Slow and steady wins the race, so if your dieting woe is choosing the right foods and controlling portions, Jenny Craig might just be for you, and for the first time ever, you can try out a week of meals before committing to the program.

Jenny Craig is offering a 5 day weight loss starter kit exclusively at Walmart. The kit includes 20 menu items (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks) along with a menu plan so you can take it for a test-drive, and when you're ready it also includes some great coupons and a free month of consultations. I tried out their new 5 Day Starter Kit and I'll tell you all about it!

The Jenny Craig 5 Day Weight Loss Starter Kit is exclusive to Walmart and can be found in the diet/weight loss aisle. If you've seen it recently and were wondering what was inside, I've got the scoop!

Contents of the kit:
  • 5 day kit with a variety of 20 meals and snacks
  • One month free consultation at any Jenny Craig center or Jenny Craig Anywhere via telephone
  • Special $50 food savings when you join a Jenny Craig center

There are 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches, 5 dinners, and 5 snacks inside along with a guide to using the Starter Kit. The guide contains all of the info you need including a menu for your week. The menu tells you any additional items you'll need to add in (such as milk for your cereal, veggies with your dinner, almonds/cheese for additional snacks, etc.) and even includes a grocery list.

In the kit is also your free month of consultations for any Jenny Craig center in the US (or via telephone at Jenny Craig Anywhere) and a booklet of $50 food credits when you sign up with Jenny Craig. What an incentive!

Now let me walk you through the meals. I tried out each any every one and I'll tell and show you what they were like. There were 2 of some of the choices and I'll mark the doubles in the kit with x2.

Let's start with the Breakfasts:

Cranberry Almond Cereal
-Add 8 oz. of non-fat milk
This was one of my favorite breakfasts (loved them all!) because it's sweet, crunchy, and full of flavor. It's not just flakes either, it's packed with dried cranberries, almonds, and sweet clusters.

Mixed Berry Bar
-Add 8 oz. of non-fat milk
Another sweet treat. This one is packed with berry flavor, crunch, and creamy sweetness.

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal
-Add 8 oz. of non-fat milk
This oatmeal cooks in its own container, is sweet, and is stuffed with large green apple chunks.

Cranberry Almond Barscotti x2
-Add 8 oz. of non-fat milk
These bars were soooo good and reminded me of the taste of cinnamon toast. They are soft like a muffin and sweet, with a cinnamon-sugar dusted outside layer.

Lunches:

Chicken Salad Kit
-Add 2 cups Garden Salad + 2 Tbsp. low fat salad dressing
The Chicken Salad kit was one of the neatest meals in that it came with a small tin of prepared chicken salad, a packet of crackers, and a cup of applesauce, and even a spork. It could easily be taken to work and munched on with a side salad.

Creamy Chicken & Corn Chowder
-Add 2 cups Garden Salad + 2 Tbsp. low fat salad dressing
The chowder comes in a sealed microwave-safe container, and was creamy and filled with chunks of chicken and veggies. Another portable lunch choice, just add a side salad.

Zesty Tortellini Soup
-Add 2 cups Garden Salad + 2 Tbsp. low fat salad dressing
The zesty tortellini soup is also in a sealed microwavable container, and is a tomato-based broth filled with lovely little tortellini.

Swedish Meatballs x2
-Add 2 cups Garden Salad + 2 Tbsp. low fat salad dressing
This was probably my favorite lunch. The swedish-style mini meatballs with pasta were smothered in a mushroom sauce with large slices of mushroom throughout.

Dinners:

Turkey Chili
-Add 1/2 cup of vegetables
Positively stuffed with ground turkey, beans, and tomatoes in a tomato sauce seasoned with chili seasonings.

White Bean Chicken Chili
-Add 1/2 cup of vegetables
The white bean chicken chili was chunky with bits of chicken, white beans, and tomato in a cumin-based sauce.

Rotini Pasta with Meat Sauce
-Add 1/2 cup of vegetables
I love a good pasta dish (don't you just love those carbs!) and this rotini was smothered in a rich tomato meat sauce.

Cheese Ravioli x2
-Add 1/2 cup of vegetables
The ravioli were good-sized, not mini ravioli, and smothered in a rich tomato sauce. They were supposed to be cheese ravioli, but I think there was a package mix-up as I got a meat ravioli. Not a problem with me!

Snacks:

Cheese Curls
Crunchy, cheesy deliciousness! Just the thing for indulging a craving for chips.

Lemon Cooler Cookies
These were one of my favorites as I'm a sucker for lemon. They tasted just like my mom's icebox lemon bars, but crunchy. So good.

S'mores Bar x2
Now for my favorite snack (if I could choose only one) and I'm so glad they included 2 of these. These S'mores bars were perfect for a late-night chocolate craving. Delicious!

Yogurt Dream Bar
These were delicious as well and tasted of white chocolate. If you've got a sweet tooth, these snack bars taste more like a candy bar! So good, so indulgent, but totally allowed.

In the Jenny Craig menu plan there are 2 additional snacks scheduled each day, so there is no starvation; You're full and satisfied all day, and the indulgent snacks included will certainly satisfy your sweet/crunchy cravings.
