Spring is here! Although it's still a bit chilly where I am, I just can't wait to get my summer glow on. You've seen how pale I am, and being pale accentuates every one of my skin imperfections, from dark undereye circles to splotchy freckles. I wear foundation frequently throughout the winter, but when summer rolls around, I opt for a tan. Having a tan just makes me feel more confident in my bare skin (also, Southern summers are not kind to makeup!)
In today's post, I'll show you how to prep your face for a flawless self-tan, show you what I use, and give you a ton of tips and tricks to get you glowing like it's already summer!
Self-tanners come in a few types:
- Spray tan, which imparts immediate color.
- Self-tanners, which develop within a few hours. Use once for full color.
- Gradual self-tanners, which develop a light, buildable color.
And here are my results after 3 days! I feel great when my skin looks great, and I just apply mascara and lipgloss to complete my glowing summer look!
SELF-TANNING TIPS & TRICKS
For face:
- Exfoliate your face with your favorite exfoliation treatment, then clean thoroughly.
- Splash your face with cold water or run an ice cube over it to help close your pores beforehand.
- Do not drink or brush your teeth right after applying self-tanner to your face.
- If you have bleached or pale hair, apply moisturizer to your hairline before tanning to keep from staining your hair.
- Apply all over your face, even around your eyes, from hairline to under the jaw, ears, neck (front and back), and chest to get a more natural-looking application.
- Avoid washing your face for at least six hours.
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser. Harsh cleansers and acne medication can strip away the color.
- Moisturize daily.
- When your color starts to fade, exfoliate and start again!
- If you wax, wait at least 24 hours after waxing to apply a self-tanner or it won't take.
- Shower with warm water and clean your skin using plain soap.
- Exfoliate with a sponge, pouf, or loofah.
- Shave. It will help exfoliate and applying a self-tanner on top of hair will make it spotty.
- Dry off completely and apply immediately after your shower.
- Apply moisturizing lotion in light amounts on your knees, elbows, knuckles, and feet. It will help stop those areas from getting too dark. Use self-tanner sparingly on those areas.
- Use gloves, a self-tanning mitt, or wash hands after applying.
- To apply to the backs of hands, use a washcloth with a little self-tanner on it.
- It's best to self-tan before bed so the color has time to develop undisturbed.
- If you have an area that has gotten too dark, exfoliate during your next shower to lighten it.
