If you have a dog, you probably know the basics to keeping them healthy and happy. It's not that hard, but sometimes you think you're on top of it when you're really over complicating matters. Sometimes the basics change, sometimes they change back, but no matter what you're doing, there are just 5 things that are "musts" for ensuring a long and happy life for your pup.

Our pup Hermione is such a sweet, loyal, and fierce baby. We've had her for 10 years now and we'll do whatever it takes to give her a long and happy life, but sometimes caring for your fur-babies can get complicated. There are so many schools of thought on their care and maintenance and so many products for dogs that it's hard to know sometimes what's needed and what's "fluff". So I wanted to share some tips that are relevant for keeping all dogs healthy and happy. Our dogs all have common needs, no matter what age they are. Let's take a closer look at five ways to keep your pup healthy and happy!

#1. Choose Healthy Food and Treats

You want to make sure to choose healthy food for your dogs. If you're unsure of what your dog's food should (or should not) contain, speak to your vet. Get information on the amount of protein and nutrients your dog needs based on their size and breed and then shop for the best brand you can afford. There are websites out there that review dog foods based on their ingredients and nutritional information. Reading the labels is important! The same goes for treats.

#2. Give Your Dog Plenty of Toys

All dogs need toys that serve different purposes. Puppies need toys they can chew on when they're teething, just like babies, and the chewing provides relief. Adult dogs need fun toys to help keep them busy, active, and help with their dental health. Some people make the mistake of not giving their dogs engaging toys and then wonder why they chew the furniture. Plus, dogs just love to play, especially if you play with them. :)

#3. Protect Your Dog (and your family) From Disease-Carrying Fleas, Ticks, and Mosquitoes

You want to make absolutely sure your dog is protected from fleas, ticks, and other pests. Not only are they annoying and painful, but they can be a danger to your dog's health and your family's as well. With the warmer weather, now is the time to be proactive about flea and tick prevention. Nip pests in the bud before a harmful (and costly) infestation with the new Adams Flea & Tick Collar for Dogs & Puppies. It's one of the first and few collars that protects your pet from fleas, ticks and mosquitoes.

Our house is bordered by a wood on one side, so fleas and ticks are a big problem for us, not to mention the mosquito problem caused by dampness and shade. Both my daughter and I have had to be treated for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever caused by tick bites, so it's no joke. We've tried a lot of methods in the past that were, frankly, a pain in the butt.

New Adams Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs & Puppies delivers pest treatment and prevention in one easy step. There's no chasing your dog around the house trying to apply a liquid medication every month or trying to get them to swallow a pill. It's easier for you and less traumatic for your pet.

"Flea collars" have changed a lot in the past years from a hard plastic to this super-soft and flexible material. It's important to know they'll be comfy for her to wear. They're also "one-size fits all" and can adjust to fit any size dog. Just clip off the end.

We've been using the new Adams Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs & Puppies for almost a month now and it's been completely effective. One inexpensive tin comes with two adjustable collars and provides a full year of protection versus the alternative of opting for monthly, potentially-messy topical treatments.

You can find the new Adams Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs & Puppies in the red circle tin at your local Walmart or on Walmart.com and save a trip by getting it during your regular shopping trips. You can also save the cost of a vet visit for treatments. Visit http://bricks.coupons.com/Bstart.asp?o=131587&c=HU&p=7v1oBWTX for more detail and a money-saving coupon (available for a limited time).

In celebration of the new collar, Adams PetCare is conducting a contest where pet owners can win $1,000 in prizes by submitting their dog’s selfie. Top honors will go to entries that capture the pride a dog feels when pest-free. No purchase necessary. See website for details.

#4. Keep Your Dog Up-to-Date on All Shots and Checkups

It's important that you take your pup to the vet for all their shots. Puppies need a series of shots that require a few visits close together. After that, your dog will only need to be seen once a year, unless something comes up, such as an allergic reaction or a bee sting. It's important to find a good vet that cares for your pet.

#5. Spend Time with Them

Not only do I love to spend time with my dog, but she loves to spend time with me as well. Dogs are pack animals, this means they love attention and being around their humans even if it's just lying by your side on the couch.
