Hi, y'all! I'm back with the last of the summer boxes: the IndieStitch Box for August 2024 unboxing! IndieStitch is a monthly subscription box for sewing enthusiasts that provides you with everything you need to complete a beginner-friendly clothing project, plus a few fun extras. This month, we'll be making a swingy, quarter-circle skirt in mini, midi, or maxi lengths to help transition your wardrobe into Fall. I also have an exclusive discount code and a spoiler for the September pattern (it's very cool!) Let's unbox it!

About IndieStitch

Sit back, sew, and savor the joy of making. We handle the sourcing so you can focus on the stitching. Expertly curated women’s clothing projects, premium fabrics, and community support—all in one box.

That’s what makes IndieStitch so special. When you open up your box, you’ll have exactly what you need to get back to sewing for you.

It's also a fantastic box for sewing beginners who want to jump into making their own clothing. All of the projects offered in the boxes are for a "confident beginner" so even if you're fairly new to sewing, you can complete these projects.

IndieStitch does a step-by-step Sew Along for each pattern that is uploaded to the Membership Hub every month. In addition to that, the Facebook group sew-along is another way to learn, share, and ask questions; It's a lovely little community!

Even if you're a beginning beginner, these kits are 100% doable.

Subscription Options

As you can see above, there are 12-month, 6-month, and 1-month plans and the cost per box goes down with the longer plans. This year we get a new option to pre-pay for the plans for an added discount!

Plus, you can use the code SOUTHERNMOM50 to get 50% off your first box on the 6 and 12-month plans! That's a HUGE savings!

How Does It Work?

  • When you sign up for IndieStitch, you'll provide your size range for the printed pattern that comes in your box every month. The size ranges are incredibly inclusive!
  • Once subscribed, you'll receive an email at the end of the month (usually around the 28th) to choose the fabric for the next month's pattern.
  • Your box ships out around the 4th of each month.
  • You can choose to sew it up on your own using the pattern instructions, use the video tutorials provided in the IndieStitch Membership Hub, and/or join the Sew Along that happens in the IndieStitch Facebook group starting on the Monday around the 14th.
  • If on a monthly plan, your membership will renew for the next month between the 13th - 15th.
  • The next month's pattern is revealed on the Second Week of the Month on all social media channels (or here on my blog 😉.)
  • If you don't like the pattern for the month (or maybe you already own it), you can switch it with a past project you didn't get or swap the pattern out for extra fabric or notions. That way, you'll always get something you'll love to sew!

There is also an IndieStitch shop where you can buy some of the past project boxes, fabrics, and sewing notions.

If you'd like to see some of their past boxes, check out all of my IndieStitch unboxings here.

Monthly Free Gift!

If you complete the current month's project and post it to the IndieStitch Sew Along Facebook group before the end of the month, you will earn a free gift in your next box! Following along and seeing everyone's projects in the group is a great part of the box experience and getting a little gift in your next box is so sweet.

August 2024 Pattern

The pattern we're making this month is the Capri Skirt from Made for Mermaids!

Capri is a flattering woven 1/4 circle skirt with several options. Designed for soft apparel woven fabric. Choose from 2 views. View A is a simple skirt and view B is a skirt with a front slit. Both options include 3 hemline lengths, mini, midi, or maxi. View A can be cut with the straight grain or on the bias for a beautiful fit. View B has 3 slit height options: a mid, high, or extra-high slit. The waistband is fitted and cleanly finished with enclosed seams. All options are finished with a side zipper. Capri can be dressed down with an oversized tee, tank top, or denim jacket. Easily dress it up for special nights or occasions with a bodysuit, cardigan, or heels!

Capri Features:
• Made for apparel woven fabrics.
• 1/4 circle skirt.
• 2 view options: view A- simple skirt, view B- slit front skirt.
• All options are finished with a side zipper.
• The waistband is fitted and the seams are enclosed for a nice finish.
• 3 hemline options on both views: mini, midi, or maxi.
• View A can be cut with the straight grain or on the bias for a beautiful fit.
• View B has 3 slit heights: mid, high, or extra-high.
• Includes video sew-through.

I really love the midi-length both with and without the front slit. I may have to make this one up a couple of times!

IndieStitch August 2024 Unboxing

The IndieStitch Box comes with a card on top that includes all of the pertinent information for the month, including a code to download the instructions and a digital version of the pattern for free (you will get a printed version of the pattern in your box.) It also gives you the current month's Sew Along dates and a QR code that takes you to the sewing hub for that month. The flip side details all of the items in your box.

First out is the fabric. I chose the Pine Bubble Crepe and we received 3 yards for our skirt pattern.

I usually try to choose natural fabrics when I can but I couldn't resist this bright, vibrant green! I love a good slinky crepe fabric and this green is so pretty. It will make a gorgeous tea-length skirt for fall!

Next out are the notions to help us make our pattern this month. We have a spool of matching Gütermann thread, two of the correct type and weight of sewing machine needles for our fabric, a length of interfacing for the waistband, and a matching invisible zipper.

Next out is our printed pattern, the Capri Skirt from Made for Mermaids. It's printed on thick copy shop paper so the pattern will last through many uses.

Next out is our 1st extra, a Needle/Thread Inserter. If you're working with a machine that doesn't have a threader (or it's wonky to use), this will come in handy. I have a vintage Singer that this will be great for. The other side works as a holder to help you insert your machine needles easier. The machine I sew on the most is a bit of a tight fit when changing the needle, so I see myself using this little tool most often for that.

Next is our 2nd extra, an Invisible Zipper Foot! I don't have one of these for my modern machine and I've been looking at getting more feet for it. I'm so excited to learn how to use this! I hate putting in invisible zippers because my regular zipper foot is a PITA to put on and there's not a lot of control so my stitching line is always wonky. Off to YouTube to find a tutorial!

Last out is our 3rd extra, a set of 8 Sewing Labels from Sarah Hearts. These are great quality woven labels! I believe there are many designs and we get a random set. I love getting labels that we can use in our projects!

That was the IndieStitch August 2024 box. This is going to be a great project to inject some fall color into my wardrobe. I love greens but don't have a lot of them in my closet. I'm so happy with the pattern, fabric, and the extras, too. I love that we got a sewing machine foot that will help us with invisible zippers and a cute set of labels to use in our projects.

I really love getting these boxes every month with a cool new clothing project and handy sewing notions, straight to my door. It's always a fun surprise to see what the extras are and they're always good.

I absolutely love that they include everything you might need to just get down to sewing, including the correct fabric type, thread, and needles for your machine. We also get a cool, indie pattern. This box is a treasure for home sewists!

SPOILERS AHEAD!

So far we know that September's pattern will be the Midway Bomber Jacket from Green Style!

There is something special about the Midway Bomber Jacket. Is it the look of the beautiful fabrics in contrast with the sporty silhouette? Or is it the on-trend look and unique detailing? Either way, there is nothing we don't love about this jacket. You have so many ways you can pull together a statement jacket that stands out in a crowd.

There are several options and many different looks you can get out of this one pattern!  You will need 1 1/2 - 2 yards of fabric and (if desired) 1 1/2 - 2 yards of lining as well as ribbing for the hem band, collar, and cuffs.

How cool is this?! I've only ever made one jacket and that was about 15 years ago. It's about time for some handmade outerwear! I love the bomber jacket style and can't wait to see the fabric choices.
