Southern Mom Loves: Make Cool Custom Skills with the New Alexa Skill Blueprints!

Make Cool Custom Skills with the New Alexa Skill Blueprints!

This post was sponsored by Amazon as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

Having fun with Alexa is easy with tens of thousands of Alexa Skills available in the Alexa App, but there's a brand new feature called Alexa Skill Blueprints that allow you to create custom Alexa Skills with no coding required! You can tell Alexa what to say in answer to your questions with Custom Q&A or create stories where your children are the characters with Storyteller.

I got to play with them first and I'll show you just how easy it is to make your own skills. If you have an Alexa-enabled device, you can do it, too!

I was sent an Amazon Echo, which I now adore. I got the Charcoal Fabric shell (you can change them to match your decor!) Now I want them in every room

If you've been reading the blog for a while you know how much I love Amazon. I'm ordering something from them just about every week.

On top of that, their gadgets are über cool + affordable, which is a match made in heaven for a family on a budget.

I hadn't tried out the Amazon Echo because I hadn't gone the smart speaker route yet, but now I'm sold. It can help you do just about everything!!!

You can not only play music, but control lights or the thermostat, make calls to other Alexa-enabled devices, get the news or the weather, track your packages, check your calendar, and a million other things. Love anything that can make my life easier.

So, I started by having fun with Alexa Skills. Search "Alexa App" on a mobile device or go to alexa.amazon.com and click on "skills" to get to them. Enable anything you'd like to play with and go to town.

You can play games like Jeopardy or Song Quiz (our favorites), fit in a 5-minute workout, meditate, set reminders, make a To Do list, or go to sleep to thunderstorm sounds.

If you want to keep the kids busy for hours, tell them to say "Alexa, open the magic door." Seriously cool. Even I get sucked into it!

Alexa Skills are cool, but would you like to create your own custom skills without having to learn coding? Well, now you can with Alexa Skill Blueprints!

You can create personalized flashcards, make your own family game, build household chore charts, and much more. To hear a sample Blueprint, just ask, “Alexa, let’s try a Blueprint.”

If you're ready to create your own, go to the Alexa Skill Blueprints site to get started. (This is where Blueprints are made, which is separate from where you manage all your Skills.)

To make a skill, just click on the blueprint you'd like to use, click "make your own", fill out the custom fields, name it, and save it. It will be available on your device in a minute or so. So cool! Check out the video I made below about making skills with blueprints!

The Storyteller is a favorite. There's just something about hearing your name in the story that kids can't get enough of!

I made the Adventure Story to surprise my daughter with and she was so taken that she wanted to help me personalize more stories. I can see making stories for my daughter to listen to while I'm traveling. What a fun surprise!

Birthday Trivia is another fun skill to surprise them with. Fill it with lots of questions and answers about the birthday child and you can play it as a group at their birthday party. Totally doing that this summer!

The Custom Q&A was also fun to play with. You can set up questions and Alexa will reply with your own answers. ;)

There is a Chore Chart to help streamline the not-so-fun tasks around the house and you can set up custom guides and instructions for houseguests, babysitters, or pet sitters. Super-handy!

There are also quizzes, jokes, burns, compliments, and other fun skill blueprints. Give them a try at blueprints.amazon.com!
