I Tried CBD Products for Pain Relief. Here's What I Found...

I received a selection of products from Green Roads in order to facilitate an honest review; All opinions are my own.

If you've been reading my blog for a while and caught my old weekly wrap-ups, you'll know that I've been dealing with some health problems for the last few years. I've tried every medication under the sun to avoid going on opiates, so I was curious about CBD oils. You hear lots of stories about how this hemp-derived oil helps with a whole host of health problems, including pain relief, so when I was contacted by Green Roads and asked if I'd like to try some out, I gladly accepted. The following is my honest review. It's not all good, it's not all bad, but it is all of the information I can give you about CBD oils and my experience trying them out.

About CBD Oil

When I told the people around me that I was trying CBD oil for pain relief, I got mixed reactions. Some people were curious and wanted to hear the results, and some people mistook CBD for THC, the compound that causes the "high" in marijuana, lol.

CDB is short for Cannabidiol, and it doesn't make you feel intoxicated. CBD has been clinically shown to provide relief for chronic pain, anxiety, inflammation, depression and many other, more serious health conditions without the "high", which is why it's legal in all 50 states of the US.

The CBD oil from Green Roads is derived from the hemp plant, and they use the highest quality pharmaceutical-grade cannabidiol and natural ingredients in their products. Read more about CBD and Green Road's products on their site.

About My Specific Pain

I think it's important to preface the review with this information because the reasons for people's pain are different, and even when two people have the same medical problems, their pain levels can be different as well. Because I'm the one trying this out, I think you should know a little about me to be able to make an informed decision about whether these products may or may not be right for your own pain.

I'll start by saying that I've been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. A delightfully non-specific way of saying that my discs are damaged in a way that is not consistent with the aging process or regular "wear and tear". I've got vertebrae that are degenerating, causing multiple bulging discs in my lower back and neck.

I've tried every non-opiate nerve pain medication out there, and even some medications that aren't for pain but have been reported to help some people with pain. Nothing has made a dent and I've been told that this indicates that the pain isn't from the impinged nerves, but from inflamed tissue.

My usual pain areas are from my neck down to my lower back and through my hips, occasionally in my hands and feet and recently, my knees have begun aching, too. The pain is a steady ache that worsens throughout the day with occasional shooting pains downward from my lower back.

It can get pretty intense at times, but I like to think I'm pretty tough. I've got a fairly high tolerance for pain and usually muddle through the day until I can't anymore. It's become a part of life at this point so any relief would be welcome.

I went into this test with high hopes, but also with a dash of reality. I have a higher than usual tolerance for pain medication and require more anesthesia to be put under. Would this affect the effectiveness of CBD for me?

The Products

I was sent a wide array of products to try out. I had no idea there were so many options! From oil tinctures to topical creams, there's a form of CBD for everything from sleeplessness to sore muscles. I started at a 100mg dosage and worked my way up from there.

The first product I tried was the CBD Terpenes Oil in Strawberry AK. I had no idea what terpenes were, but their site tells me "They are what give plants their specific scents. For example, the smell of flowers, fruits, and cannabis are all produced by terpenes."

I have to say that the size of this print made me feel septuagenarian-ish. 😂After finding an old magnifying glass, I figured out the dose and bomb's away.

It was...grassy. No big deal for me since I'm a green juice lover, but it's something to be aware of. The taste is very much like a mouthful of fresh parsley with a hint of strawberry, but not in a terrible way? It's hard to describe.

After a few days at 100mg, then 200mg with no effect, I went up to the CBD Oils, which were in 350mg & 550mg dosages.

These mixtures aren't an "oil" per se, but a tincture made with vegetable glycerin that's easier to swallow than a mouthful of oil.

It is slightly thicker than you would think, maybe the consistency of a child's fever medication, but the taste is...also interesting. I wonder how well this would work in a juice or smoothie? It might be an option if you're very sensitive to the taste.

I was also sent a week's worth of Daily Dose syringes in a 350mg dosage. I can see these coming in handy to keep in a bag just in case you left the house without taking your CBD. The syringes contain their regular CDB oil tincture and they come in different dosages from 350mg to 1500mg.

The topical sent to me was the Muscle & Joint relief cream in 150mg. They also offer creams with higher concentrations of CBD and a cream that offers a topical heat as well.

I tried the cream a few times on my neck and back at the start of the trial, but I couldn't tell any difference. It may be that you need to use it over a period time to see a difference or it may be that this cream is not meant for my particular problem, so I don't think I can make an accurate assessment of this product. It has great reviews, so you'll have to decide for yourself.

As I steadily raised the dosage every few days, I supplemented some of the oil with other products to get my total daily dosage.

The first gummy I tried was the Sleepy Z's. They're CBD gummies with added melatonin to help you get to sleep. Each dose comes in an individual packet and contains 2 gummies that total 50mg of CBD. They didn't taste of the CBD oil as much, but it was present.

I occasionally use melatonin gummies to help me sleep, so these were right up my alley, but at $10 per dose, I can't recommend them unless you're already on a CBD regimen are replacing part of your dose with them. The individual packet size would come in handy while traveling, though.

Next up was the CBD Froggies. These also came in a single dose packet, with 4 sour candy frogs totaling 100mg of CBD. These weren't bad taste-wise either, but each big gummy frog was a mouthful. If my dose was just 25 or 50mg per day, I wouldn't mind, but getting down all 4 of these in one go was a test of will.

The last edible CBD product I tried was the Relax Bears at 300mg per bear in a bottle of 30 sour bears. These were the best tasting gummies in that I couldn't detect even the tiniest taste of CBD oil. They were actually really good and at 300mg per little bear, it was easy to get down a daily dose.

These were hands-down my favorite CBD product because they were so easy to use. There was no measuring and no chance of spillage and calculating your dose was a no-brainer. Plus, yummy, sour fruity gummy bears are a nice treat.

Results?

Sadly, not for me. I increased the dosage to 1500mg per day and at most I got the same relief I would have gotten from an aspirin. So many people have reported great results for pain relief that I was incredibly disappointed when I reached the end of the supply after almost a month and didn't have those results myself.

I'm not saying CBD doesn't work for a multitude of people and problems and pains, but it didn't work for mine. I think this is important because I hadn't heard about this result in any of the online articles I read about CBD. I wanted it to work. I was expecting it to work, but that wasn't the case. Whether it was my body chemistry or the dosage, CBD wasn't the miracle drug for me.

I hope this article helps someone and if you're interested in trying CBD for yourself, you should check out Green Roads. They were named the #1 privately held CBD company in the U.S. and all of their products are Pharmacist formulated. I would recommend the Relax Bears. 😉
