IndieStitch April 2023 Unboxing + a Discount Code & May Pattern Spoiler!

Friday, April 14, 2023

I received a complimentary box from IndieStitch in order to facilitate an unboxing post. All opinions are my own. This post may contain some affiliate links.

Hi! I'm back with the IndieStitch Box for April 2023! IndieStitch is a monthly box for sewing enthusiasts that provides you with everything you need to complete the month's (beginner to intermediate) apparel project, plus a few fun extras. Since all of the planning and shopping is done for you, it's a great way to be able to get down to the fun part. I've also got a spoiler for the May project and a fantastic 50% off discount code for you! Let's unbox it!

Setting you up with everything you need, month after month, to sew your own clothes.

"Hi, I’m Amber! I created Indie Stitch so that you can make your own clothes even if your days are long and your hands are busy...Sewing your own clothes, choosing to create something with your hands, and the happiness that comes from wearing your new outfit feels incredible. It’s an accomplishment worth celebrating.

When I worked for boutique shops sewing clothes and bags, I realized something: it was easy and straightforward for me to finish those projects because all of the materials were sent to me. The thread matched, I had the right type and amount of fabric, and the patterns were printed and ready to go. All I needed to do was sit and sew."

That’s what makes IndieStitch so special. When you open up your box, you’ll have exactly what you need to get back to sewing for you.

Subscription Options

As you can see above, there are 12-month, 6-month, and 1-month plans and the cost goes down with the longer commitments. The "First Box" price shown above for the 12-month and 6-month plans includes a 30% discount, but I've got an even better discount code for you!

How Does It Work?

When you sign up for IndieStitch, you'll provide your size range for the printed pattern that comes in your box every month.

Once subscribed, you'll receive an email around the end of the month (28th - End of Month) to choose the fabric you want to use for the next month's pattern. The boxes ship out around the 4th of each month. You can choose to sew on your own using the video tutorials provided or join the Sew Along that happens in the IndieStitch Facebook group on the Monday around the 14th.

Your membership will renew for the next month from the 13th - 15th.

The next month's pattern is revealed on the Second Week of the Month on all social media channels (or here on my blog 😉.)

If you'd like to see some of their past boxes, check out all of my IndieStitch unboxings here.

April Pattern

The pattern we're going to be making this month is the Button A-Line Skirt by Ellie & Mac"The Adult Button A-line Skirt Pattern is love at first sight!.... Even if you've never sewn a woven skirt pattern before, you'll be delighted to find that you can master this pattern due to the detailed sewing instructions and step-by-step color photos."

It features three length options so you can create the look you want:
- Mid-thigh
- Above Knee
- Below Knee

The button front can be fully functional and buttoned or snapped up. Or, it can be a faux placket with a few working buttons/snaps at the top.

The skirt fronts include darts, and the back features a curved yoke. The back of the waistband uses elastic to ensure current and future fit. And the a-line skirt design is flattering and cute!

Hem options include:
- Regular Straight Hemline
- Scalloped Hemline

This is a pretty versatile pattern that has lots of options to be able to make a piece of clothing you'll love and will wear often. I may omit the button front entirely for a side closure. That's the best part about learning to sew; You can make every pattern your own!

April Fabric Choices

The fabric choices for this month are:
    1. Stripe Chambray - 50% Cotton, 50% Polyester - GSM 120
    2. Navy Linen - 85% Viscose, 8% Linen, 7% Cotton - GSM 180
    3. Black Houndstooth - 65% Polyester, 35% Cotton - GSM 220
    4. Sage Floral Linen - 70% Rayon, 30% Linen - GSM 180
    5. Peach Floral Linen - 70% Rayon, 30% Linen - GSM 180

Your box comes with a card right on top that includes all of the pertinent information for the month including a code that you can use to download a digital version of the pattern. It gives you the current Sew Along dates and a QR code that takes you right to the video tutorial and resources for the month.

First out is our fabric. For this pattern, I received a length of the Peach Floral Linen (the tag usually states how much yardage was included, but not this month.) They will send you enough fabric to make the largest version of the pattern in your size range. It also gives us care instructions for pre-washing our fabric.

This linen is a bit heavier and rougher than I was expecting. I thought it would be more like a smooth, floaty rayon but the weave is much looser and the weight is a bit heavier than I thought it would be. I'm guessing that it needs to be a bit heftier for the more structured parts (yoke, placket, scalloped hem) of the pattern we have this month. Remember to pre-wash your fabric!

Next out is a bundle of notions to help us make our pattern. There is a spool of matching Gütermann thread, two of the correct machine needles for our fabric type and weight, a length of lightweight fusible interfacing, a length of waistband elastic, and a set of eight buttons.

Next out is our paper pattern, the Button A-Line Skirt by Ellie & Mac and this month our pattern is printed in color! You can cut it out directly or trace off just the pieces you'll be using in your size if you like to conserve your patterns.

Next out is our first "extra", a 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge. I've never used one of these; I have a simple sewing gauge that I use constantly, but looking at the additional uses, this will replace a few of the tools I have in my sewing room.

Next is our 2nd extra, a Selfie Light for your phone! This looks like a pretty cool light that will for sure come in handy.

So that was what is inside the IndieStitch April 2023 box. I absolutely love that they include everything you might need to just get down to sewing, including the correct fabric type, thread, and needles for your machine. We also get a cool, indie pattern. This box is a treasure for home sewists!

It seems like all of the projects offered in the boxes are for a "confident beginner" so even if you're fairly new to sewing, you can do it. On top of that, the owner of IndieStitch does a step-by-step Sew Along for each pattern, so even if you're a beginning beginner, it is 100% doable.

Plus, you'll learn so much just from watching and following along and if you have a question, you can always ask in the Facebook group. It's a nice little community!

🛑 SPOILERS AHEAD! 🛑

So far we know that May's pattern will be the Square Neck Top by Friday Pattern Co.

"The Square Neck Top is a boxy dolman sleeved top with a square neckline. It is slightly cropped. It is a great beginner sewing pattern and includes pattern pieces to make the top from a knit or woven fabric!"

- Easy to sew!
- Includes pieces for making the top in a knit or a woven fabric.
- Includes front pieces drafted for an A/B cup or a C/D cup.

If you'd like to subscribe to IndieStitch Monthly Sewing Kits, you can get 30% off your first box on the 6- or 12-month plans, but the absolutely lovely owner offered something even better for my readers!
