I've got an easy recipe today that's sure to wow your cheese-loving holiday guests! It's a 3-tier Cheese Ball Tower and making it is super-simple because I'm using pre-made cheese balls paired with my own toppings. For my tiers, I've paired the sharp cheddar with nutty pecans, port wine with sweet and tart dried cherries, and the smoky bacon with crunchy almonds. I also made some cute cheese ball pinecones to decorate the tray with and I'll show you how to make it all in the post below!

This is a great recipe to make for a holiday table if you can never choose which cheese ball to serve or if you have cheese-loving guests (and seriously, who doesn't love cheese!)

For my tiers, I'm using sharp cheddar covered in chopped pecans on the bottom, port wine cheddar covered in chopped, dried cherries in the center, and smoky bacon cheddar covered in chopped almonds for the top. You can really use any flavor of cheese covered in any kind of nut or dried fruit you like. The possibilities are drool-worthy!

I'm using cheese balls from Kaukauna because they're my favorite and they're the pre-made cheese balls my mom and grandma loved, too.

For my 3-tier cake shape, I'm using 3 sizes of containers. You can use anything in the kitchen with a round shape or you can even shape it with your hands; No mold required!

Ingredients/supplies:

  • 3 Kaukauna Cheese Balls in Sharp Cheddar, Port Wine, and Smoky Bacon
  • 6 oz. bag of sliced almonds
  • 2.25 oz. bag of chopped pecans
  • 6 oz. bag of dried cherries
  • plastic wrap

Directions:

1. First, let's shape the bottom layer. Place the cheese ball on a square of plastic wrap. You can either mold it into a flat-topped cylinder shape with your hands or use a mold approximately 3" in diameter.

Tip: You will want to work the ball layers a bit with your hands to expose the cheese so that the toppings will stick!

To use a mold: pull up the corners of the wrap to loosely cover the cheese, use your hands to make the cheese ball slimmer than your mold, slide it into the mold, and push the cheese down to fill it.

2. For the middle layer, cut off the bottom third of the cheese ball. Save it to make cheese pinecones or have yourself a snack. :)

Repeat the steps above to shape it into your middle layer.

3. For the top layer, cut off the bottom half of the last cheese ball. Repeat the steps above to shape it into your top layer.

4. (optional) To make the cheese ball pinecones, use the cheese you cut off of your tower layers. Cut the slices into portions that correspond with your desired pinecone sizes. I'm using all of the leftover port wine cheese to make 2 large pinecones and using 1 slice of the smoky bacon cheese shown below to make 3 tiny pinecones.

Shape your cheese into a cone shape. Using the whole almond slices, insert them into the cheese from the thinner side of the cone, down, in overlapping rows. Loosely wrap in plastic wrap to help them hold their shape while they chill. Refrigerate.

5. Chop up the dried cherries and the remainder of the almond slices and place each topping in a bowl, along with the chopped pecans. Let's get rolling!

6. Roll the sides and top of each layer in a different topping, leaving the bottom bare so that it will stick.

7. Stack them up from largest to smallest and you're all done! You can serve this immediately or to make it ahead, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate.

Decorate your cheese plate with those cute cheese ball pinecones, set out your crackers, and you've got a unique centerpiece for your holiday table that everyone will love.
